Travel with the Roaming Buffs
The Roaming Buffs provide CU alums with opportunities to meet, explore, learn and have fun together. We offer trips to destinations around the world with accommodations ranging from luxury tours and cruises to outdoor adventures. Wherever you go, you’ll be able to sample the distinctive cuisine, one-of-a-kind vistas and cultural and historical flavor of the area. Whether it’s watching the polar bears in Manitoba, trekking through the rainforest and examining Mayan ruins or meeting the women “behind the veil” in Morocco, the Roaming Buffs strive to ensure that each trip is exciting, safe and affordable - while still feeding the mind and spirit.
Why travel with the Roaming Buffs?
It’s simple! We take all the guesswork and hassle out of planning your trip and making travel
arrangements. We hand pick tour companies that specialize in travel for alumni groups, then review their array of trips and choose those we know our alums and friends will love.
Who is eligible to travel with the Roaming Buffs?
All alums along with their family and friends are invited to travel with us. Travel with the Roaming Buffs is a benefit of membership in the CU Alumni Association. Each member may have a guest travel with them on their membership. Families can travel on one membership per address.
More details on membership.
What IS group travel?
Group travel does not mean that you are being herded from one place to another like a bunch of
buffaloes. It does ensure that you’ll be traveling with people sharing similar interests and with a common bond, the University of Colorado!
All of the details associated with travel are taken care of for you. Your lodging is guaranteed (you won’t arrive to find a hotel has overbooked). Your luggage is handled for you. Most of our tours offer you sites to see, excursions to enjoy and lectures that would be difficult for you to arrange on your own.
Our groups range in size from two to nearly 50 people, but are more typically in the range of eight to 24. Many lifelong friendships have begun on our trips, as they are just the right size to get to know everyone.
What is the age of most passengers?
The age range for most passengers on our standard trips is from 45 to 90 with the median range 55 to 75. There might be families consisting of children, parents and grandparents. There may be mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, sisters with sisters, brothers with brothers, and friends with friends. Many people travel alone (singles or people with non-traveling spouses) very comfortably with us.
We also will be expanding trip offerings for alums with families and for those in the 25 to 40-age range that are looking for a different experience!
Escorted trips
What is an escort and/or tour director? When 15 or more CU passengers sign up for a trip we will assign an alumni staff member to act as an escort. Our escort is there to ensure that our alums and friends have tons of fun on the trip and, in general, perform the duties of a host/hostess.
Whether or not there is an alumni staff escort, there is always a tour or cruise director with the group at all times. The tour directors are responsible for all trip logistics. They make certain your room is ready, that your luggage gets delivered promptly, that transportation is ready when needed and that the group stays on schedule.
Shared departure dates
Trip departure dates are often shared with other institutions, usually (but not always) other alumni associations. This provides the added assurance that a trip will not be cancelled due to a low number of travelers. Some of our trips are exclusive for CU travelers.

Occupancy options and info
Double occupancy
All trip pricing is based on double occupancy, meaning two people sharing a room or cabin.
Single travelers
Most tours offer a limited number of single rooms for those individual travelers wishing a room of their own. A supplemental fee (the cost the tour company pays for the room is the same amount, whether there are one or two people in the room) will be charged. Single travelers can request to be matched with a roommate in order to reduce their cost. The tour company will strive to find a compatible partner—same gender and smoking preferences, etc.—for a room share. The single supplement is required if a roommate cannot be found.
Group airfare info
Group airline travel
Please read carefully. Flight schedules for group air travel may not always be the most direct routes and/or most convenient times. If direct routes and convenient times are very important to you, please ask about receiving the airline credit for the program and making your own air reservations. If you book your own flights, you are responsible for making connections with the main group.
Airline seating request
Every effort will be made to secure the seats you request. However, the final decision on seat assignments rests solely with the airlines, and in some cases with the gate agent. All airlines have guidelines on seat assignments that favor persons paying unrestricted fares and high-level frequent flyer members. Each carrier holds a large percentage of window and aisle seats in coach for these preferred travelers. Group travelers are paying discounted fares and are not first priority to the airline. Group seat assignments are made very near the time of departure and depend on availability at that time. Your understanding is appreciated.
