Dear Alum,

We’re thrilled to welcome Deborah Fowlkes as our new executive director. She’s the first female director of the Alumni Association since its inception in 1882. She hails from Temple University in Philadelphia and before that Duke. She grew up in Boulder and went to Boulder High.

“I’m delighted to be back home in Boulder as a member of the CU family,” she says. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to share the exciting things going on at the campus, from innovative research to stimulating classroom topics to great athletic performances. I look forward to getting to know our alumni and helping us reconnect them to one another and the university.”

Help a new tradition grow

Join us for the newest Forever Buffs tradition! We will welcome freshmen on Friday, Aug. 20 following their convocation at Folsom Field by forming a human tunnel with hundreds of alumni and students. The tunnel will form between the physics building and Farrand Field for half an hour starting at 11:45 a.m., plus you’ll get lunch after. Interested? E-mail Melanie.

Many Buffs will be keeping a close eye on the gridiron this fall, and even our small alumni chapters often gather to watch a football game. The season starts Saturday, Sept. 4 against Colorado State in Denver and ends Friday, Nov. 26 against Nebraska in Lincoln, unless we go to a bowl. D.C. gets our “Featured Chapter” nod

One of our most active and loyal chapters, the D.C. Buffs are this month’s featured chapter. They have graciously hosted Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano twice this year for receptions, plan fantastic watch parties, sports leagues for local alumni and do a great job celebrating CU for the large alumni base in the District of Columbia area. They are also championing the first CU license plates outside of Colorado – Marylanders can now get Buff license plates. Train with others for the bicycle classic

The 2010 Buffalo Bicycle Classic is just around the corner, Sept. 12. There’s still time to train for the distance of your choice, making your support of student scholarships (more than $1.2 million so far) both easy and fun. Denverites raise fun and funds

Congratulations to the Denver Young Alums for hosting their first ever Poker Run on Saturday, Aug. 7. Over 200 alumni attended and $2,500 was raised in scholarship funds for incoming students. The law class of 2010 contributed $13,635 for the “Class of 2010 Clock” that now graces the Wolf Law Building courtyard. The class did not stop there, making an additional gift of $5,000 to benefit the Law Loan Repayment Assistance Program, which assists law graduates working in public service positions in defraying school loan debt. Archaeological workers are Forever Buff!

Anthropology professor Payson Sheets, in the lower middle in the photo, took Forever Buffs t-shirts to his excavation site at El Ceren, El Salvador last month. Ceren is a well-preserved ancient Maya village that was buried by deep volcanic ash 1,400 years ago that Sheets discovered in 1976. The men in the photo do the excavation work, and the women help in the lab cleaning artifacts and cataloging them. “And a few of their children were so excited,” Sheets says, “to be a part of the photo and get a CU t-shirt that there was no way I would have excluded them.”

They hiked all the way to Crested Butte!

Our annual Aspen to Crested Butte hike was a great success this year, led by Kent Zimmerman (Edu’80, MPubAd’90) his wife, Christine Lanier Zimmerman (Ger’80, MEdu’90). I was a residence adviser of the right side of Sewall Hall in 1962-63. My little “apartment” was just off the huge living room. Sewall was an upper-class women’s resident hall. We called it Menopause Manor. The women and I obeyed most of the rules and had wonderful times together. Read more.

Chicagoans organizing sports leagues

Looking for a sports league this fall? Volleyball, flag football, dodge ball and softball leagues have formed. If you’re interested in another sport, e-mail Forrest Vollrath (Bus’85, MBA’89) and volunteer to be the organizer for that league. Forrest expects to form leagues for most of the major sports this fall.

Dear Alum,

Continuing Education is offering full or part-day courses on Saturdays called CU on the Weekend during June and July, mostly on art and culture topics. Meanwhile, the first of four summer school terms began on June 1 and end Aug. 6. And get this: about 8,000 students are taking 500 summer courses including 10 online (which Continuing Education’s marketing director Ted Rockwell calls “a big deal for the main campus”). Join the fun on Sept. 12! Since 2003 the Buffalo Bicycle Classic has attracted more than 15,000 registrants. The mostly medium- to long-distance ride is popular because it’s fun and advances a good cause. It has raised $1.3 million for scholarships for talented Arts and Sciences students. CU Foundation trustee and donor awarded

“I didn’t choose CU, it chose me,” says CU Foundation trustee, donor and CU-Boulder alum Zuhair Fayez (Arch, MA’71). The founder of the Middle East’s largest architectural and engineering firm, he has generously supported the architecture and planning college at UC Denver and CU-Boulder. Three CU degrees and a gift lead to more

Carol Robinson Reynolds (Math’58, MEdu’68, EdD’78) knows the value of a CU degree. In 2007 she and her husband established a scholarship at the education school. And now they have made an estate commitment that will not only exponentially increase this scholarship’s impact, but also strengthen the school’s financial standing across the board. Here’s more.

Severy family names Center for Community cartouche

In 1966, newlyweds Larry Severy (MPsych, PhD’70) and his wife Linda Severy were living in Boulder as Larry completed his doctorate at CU-Boulder. “We lived in married student housing on East Campus,” says Linda. “There was a drive-in movie theater next door, and we would sit on our porch to watch the movies since we couldn’t afford to go in!” This year, they decided to name the Colorado columbine cartouche (stone ornament) on the façade of the new Center for Community on campus, honoring their home state. In May Harvey Ancel (MPubPer’52), who is 91, received the Channel 7 Everyday Hero Award for his extensive volunteer activities in the Littleton, Colo., public schools. He has long been a dedicated volunteer helping to bring greater literacy through reading to those around him.

Al Williams goes the distance to the College Football Hall of Fame

Alfred Williams (Soc ex’91), one of the key figures in the University of Colorado football team’s rise to national prominence in the late 1980s, will be the fifth Buffalo to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He is a member of a very impressive overall class of 13 others who will be inducted this December in New York City. Read more.

Crew does well

The CU club crew team had a successful season this year. At the October Frostbite Regatta in Wichita, Kan., they won several medals, and kept pace in Austin, Texas, where the men’s varsity won their race. The team also placed well in several heats at the American Collegiate Rowing Association championships in Oklahoma City in May. Here’s more.

Aquanaut lives two weeks in world’s only undersea laboratory

Steve Chappell (MAero’03, PhD’06) just finished taking part in the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) 14 undersea analog mission. It involved staying in the Aquarius undersea habitat 3.5 miles off the coast of Key Largo, Fla., while performing experiments inside and outside the lab related to NASA’s mission to expand human presence into the solar system. Mission information and more about Steve can be found here. He lives in Louisville, Colo.

Boulder Buffs go gardening

Four alumni and three journalism CU students with the Boulder Buff alumni chapter carried out a community service event April 3 building a small deer fence at the Growing Gardens Hawthorn site. They say, “We knew we could put on one heck of a holiday event, but apparently we have some gardening skills as well.” Here’s more about what the chapter’s up to.

A student’s Antarctic journey

“Where to next?” my family and friends asked me after I returned home in April 2008 from a four-month stay in the cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica. “I don’t know, maybe Antarctica is next on the list?” I would sarcastically answer. I knew a few people who had made the epic journey south but I never thought I would actually get there, certainly not while I was a CU student. Read more.

The correct answer to last month’s question was that the ethnic studies department was formed in 1996. The winner, Linda Bates Leali (Mus’69, MEdu’73) of Denver, shared her rich experience with the organizational precursors to ethnic studies. She helped found the first Educational Opportunity Program in 1969 and was a founding member of the Black Student Alliance, which still exists.

The winner, Linda Bates Leali (Mus’69, MEdu’73) of Denver, shared her rich experience with the organizational precursors to ethnic studies. She helped found the first Educational Opportunity Program in 1969 and was a founding member of the Black Student Alliance, which still exists.

What do you remember about your commencement? Sunny and 75 degrees? Or a foot of snow? Last Friday at the CU-Boulder graduation the weather was sunny with a temperature of just 37. A total of 5,825 degrees were conferred: 4,530 bachelor’s, 850 master’s, 175 law and 270 doctoral.

Alum aids Haiti relief efforts

Mike Aguilar (IntlAf’06) writes, “I started a new job a couple months ago with USAID and found myself in Haiti for two weeks after the earthquake hit in January. It was an emotional but rewarding trip as I got my ‘real’ first-hand experience doing humanitarian work. These days I’m working very closely with projects in Afghanistan, but luckily I haven’t been sent there yet. I’ve got a trip planned to Rwanda later this summer which I’m looking forward to. But life is good in Washington, D.C.”

Tracie Olson Stephens (Mktg’89) of Longmont was last month’s winner. She found out there are six buildings on campus that meet the guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification to one degree or another.

Dear Alum,

Nine years ago I returned from living for three years in Santiago, Chile. I still have several friends there, who needless to say I e-mailed the day of the Feb. 27 8.8 magnitude earthquake. As of this writing I have heard from three of them, and I continue to be extremely preoccupied about them and the situation in Chile.

Cortney Kesselman (Hist’09) was in Santiago when the quake hit and was unscathed. She told the Colorado Daily on March 1 that, “There’s definitely a feeling of panic seeping through the city.” Judd Rogers (IntAf’02,MBA’09) has moved to Santiago to do renewable energy work and wrote in his blog, “For the most part, structures held strong and people were able to escape damaged buildings and the oncoming tsunami without harm.” Go here for Chile aid organizations. Parents honor daughter’s legacy

Joel Feldman and Dianne Anderson joined the CU Parents Association board of directors when their son Brett was a freshman. On July 17, 2009, tragedy struck when Joel and Dianne lost their daughter Casey Feldman. The pain of grief was lessened when they were comforted by caring friends from the parent’s board. Because of their strong connection to CU-Boulder, Joel and Dianne have established two endowments to honor Casey’s memory and to promote service. Learn more.

In the middle of their continent hopping of the last year plus Christine Zimmerman (Ger’80, MEdu’90) snapped a photo of former alumni director Kent Zimmerman (Edu’80, MPubAd’90) showing off the most recent Coloradan they had seen. They’re in Tangier, Morocco, which Kent describes as “one of the most different places we’ve been on this adventure,” adding, the Middle East is “now on our short list.” He warns that “the most important lesson we’ve learned so far is don’t believe anything you hear about anywhere in the media.” Here’s their chatty blog, dontwait2long, full of photos.

Yvette Padilla-Teschner (Mus’92, Jour’93) of Pueblo sent this photo of her 4-year-old daughter, Victoria, with Chip at the Texas A&M game last year. It was Victoria’s first CU football game and her mom says, “She had a blast. She couldn’t stop shouting ‘Go CU! Go CU!’” And regarding Chip Yvette says, “He’s definitely a different Chip from when I was at CU. But we still love him!”

An Egyptian odyssey

Last month’s winner was Mark Saunders (MCivEngr’82) of Bartlett, Tenn., who said that with Port-au-Price’s pre-earthquake population of about 700,000 (see Wikepedia) and the terrible destruction caused by the quake, its population is now about 500,000, a choice not in the contest but on further investigation made the most sense.

Mark added, “I love these trivia contests, as they encourage us to surf the web and in the process we actually learn a little outside of the question.”

The power of CU culture

Celebrating what Nancy Millward (IntlAf’99) calls “the power of the CU culture,” she and her husband, Sam Millward (Bus’97, MTelecom’00), were in Chile before the Feb. 27 earthquake to visit CU senior writing instructor Anne Bliss (MLing’88, PhDEdu’93) in the southern city of Talca.

Nancy says Anne “has spent a lot of time in Chile, and being a teacher, she is very involved in what is happening in her town. She is a wonderful educator and is really making a difference in people’s lives there.”

Dear Alum,

Nine years ago I returned from living for three years in Santiago, Chile. I still have several friends there, who needless to say I e-mailed the day of the Feb. 27 8.8 magnitude earthquake. As of this writing I have heard from three of them, and I continue to be extremely preoccupied about them and the situation in Chile.

Cortney Kesselman (Hist’09) was in Santiago when the quake hit and was unscathed. She told the Colorado Daily on March 1 that, “There’s definitely a feeling of panic seeping through the city.” Judd Rogers (IntAf’02,MBA’09) has moved to Santiago to do renewable energy work and wrote in his blog, “For the most part, structures held strong and people were able to escape damaged buildings and the oncoming tsunami without harm.” Go here for Chile aid organizations. Marylanders: you can be Buff, too

If you’re a Maryland alum, you can get a Buff license plate. To accept applications for CU license plates there we must submit names and Maryland license plate numbers of eligible alumni to the Motor Vehicle Administration. A minimum donation of $50 to the District of Columbia Buffs scholarship fund and a $25 fee to the MVA are required. When we receive your information, we’ll follow up. For all intents and purposes we are back to living in the dorms. We have a little studio apartment with strange turquoise outdoor furniture, a finicky on-demand water heater, a bed so hard we had to buy four-inch thick sponge rubber to make it “sleepable” and we need five keys to get through the front door. By far, it’s the quirkiest place we’ve lived in years. What a great time!

Looking around our nest, you would swear you’re back in Boulder, with the beautiful mountains, gorgeous buildings, red tile roofs and students everywhere. But this college town is 5,000 miles from the Flatirons, 4,000 feet higher in elevation, on a different continent and you’re just as likely to see stunning native dresses as you are jeans and flip-flops. Cuenca, Ecuador, is as close to being Boulder’s twin as you can get and a brilliant place to learn Spanish.

The perfect soft landing on this huge continent, Cuenca is so similar to Boulder you can’t help but constantly compare the two. The university here is considered one of the best in the country, full of aspiring doctors, architects, philosophers, engineers, lawyers, scientists, journalists, (yes, Professor Van Gerven, even anthropologists). That’s just the University of Cuenca. Add to it a host of other colleges and technical schools in this city of 200,000 and you have a place that exists for education and thrives on ideas.

Like Boulder, the whole city is in a spectacular valley. Whereas in Boulder there’s Highway 36 heading southeast to Denver and the plains, here the highway heads out in the same direction but downhill 9,000 feet into the flat jungles of the Amazon basin. Less than 100 miles from the equator, at this altitude the weather is always like Boulder’s in late May. It’s permanently spring here, hillsides are dripping with green, flowers are everywhere, the grass looks like a golf course and the 80-degree days are followed by chilly evenings that beg for a fire, a hot drink and a thick sweater.

Our “dorm room” is the best part though. We feel like we’ve been assigned that top floor room in Farrand, the one with the great balcony…as a “single.” We found it our first day here by pure luck. A hand-lettered sign taped to the building’s gate advertised a furnished apartment for rent. Using our limited Spanish, we tracked down the owner, who took us up to a tiny studio apartment on the sixth floor. It had everything we needed, all back-dropped by windows that led to a rooftop terrace larger than the apartment itself. The views are stunning, including the ones down onto the busy square and another across the street to the gorgeous blue tiled domes of the cathedral (see photo on left). We took it, paid our first month’s rent of $300 and 10 minutes later we had the keys and were moving in.

Like Boulder all those years ago, our time is an unending string of fresh experiences, hours chock full of classes, days of exploration and long meals of relaxed conversation with fascinating people. Sure, we have to study, actually a lot, because every interaction with anybody, anywhere, is a pop quiz because they usually don’t speak English. Progress is so obvious, so fast and so rewarding that it’s just plain fun. Like those difficult classes of yore with legends like Higman, Frascona, Zubrow, Boulding and yes, you Dennis: the more we put in the more we get out. Finally understanding what the clerk said, being able to stumble our way through the newspaper, realizing we just followed a two-hour conversation about the world economy and understood it all (except of course how we ever got into this mess). We forget sometimes in our day-to-day lives what a thrill it is to learn new skills.

As has always been true, the people you meet really make a “dorm” come alive. The mix of interesting Ecuadorians, Columbians, Australians, Germans, Brits and Canadians that we ‘ve met here in just a few months would fill a book. Last night it was dinner with unassuming Ed, a Canadian who along with three others built a raft out of the recycled remains of an old Manhattan bar, then sailed it across the Atlantic. When you see what they spent 60 days on, in the rough waters of the North Atlantic, you’ll be speechless. At this point in our “career break” we feel much healthier and swear we’re 10 years younger. It’s the newness and constant learning; everything we do is something we’ve never done before, and it makes us like rambunctious four-year-olds.

Life is rewarding, fascinating, fun, hard work, sometimes frustrating and sometimes pure joy. Just like Boulder was for so many of us all those years ago…or was that yesterday?

Yes, it’s like we are back in the dorms, only this time without RA’s…what a great way to spend a semester.

Kent Zimmerman (Edu’80, MPubAd’90) and Christina Zimmerman (Germ’90, MEdu’90) left the Alumni Association and Boulder on Feb. 5, 2008, following CU Professor Leaf Van Boven’s advice that happiness is based on experiences not things (experiences get better with age, things just get old). They have now been to Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Morocco, Spain, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and maybe one or two more. As part of the experience they spent four months living in Cuenca, Ecuador learning Spanish. In May they have to choose whether to go back to the real world and go back to work or head to China…tell them what you think they should do, see photos and read about the year’s travels at www.kentsadventure.com.

Kent Zimmerman (Edu’80,MPubAd’90) interrupted his travel itinerary to drop in at the Alumni Association on Sept. 25. While visiting he posed for a picture with a carved buffalo given by an alum. He’s standing in front of printouts of the last two editions of Buffalum Notes, which he still contributes to occasionally while on the road.

Amazing, amazing, just amazing. Every single turn in the Dolomites prompt the same response. After weeks of relentless sun and heat in Southern Italy we swallowed hard and rented a tiny Smart car that just fit us and this bag we never really opened but kept with us for 5,000 kilometers (and which we called the albatross) and headed north.

Our last experience with a rental car in Italy had been an unmitigated disaster. Twenty years at rental car desks refusing the additional insurance had become a habit. I did it again, not considering that I was no longer employed or that my home car insurance was in sleep mode. Anyone looking at all the dented brand new cars in Italy would recognize that this is a hazardous place for smooth metal panels.

Spend seven days in a WalMart parking lot, increase the speed tenfold and you get a feel for driving in Italy. $3,000 poorer from the last experience, we were fully insured this time as we headed off on the relative sanity of the Italian Autostrada, a 600 mile long toll road that sweeps up the agricultural center of Italy and crashes, so to speak, into the Alps. We really needed mountains and cooler weather.

We overnighted in Bologna for the simple reason that I had read about it in John Grisham’s book The Broker. I think I’ll use his books as travel guides from now on. Who would have thought a town named after a luncheon meat would offer so much? The huge historic area, off limits to all but a few local cars, is a warren of beautiful squares, parks, pubs, cafes and markets. Pocketed with so many Medici towers and churches it looked like a playful giant had collected them over time and carefully placed all perfectly in one spot, except for the one crazily tilted tower that makes the leaning tower of Pisa look upright.

It’s the walkways that most impress. Miles on miles of soaring, vaulted, arched, covered walkways. These colonnaded walkways with mosaic tile floors remain cool and breezy even on the hottest day. Think the UMC fountain area on steroids.

Topping it all off was the two-mile-long covered stairway visible from any high point in the city that lead up the green foothills to the Cathedral of San Lucca. Imagine a gorgeous covered breezeway from Pearl Street to the amphitheater on Flagstaff Mountain and you get the picture.

We headed north again across the 100 miles of flat plains between Bologna’s foothills and the Alps along the back of Romeo and Juliet’s Verona. As the highway headed up the valley and the sky became deeper blue, our tiny car’s inadequate air conditioning finally caught up. Sixty miles later we were in Bolzano. We bailed out of the Autostrada (“58 Euros, per favore”) and turned up the hill at the first “pensione” sign we came to. Within minutes we had spiraled our way up a one-lane highway that we’d call a bike path back home. In just minutes we found ourselves on an incredibly green alpine shelf backed by soaring granite spires and picturesque mountain farms — so these were the Dolomites! We were hanging over the valley below, with jaw dropping mountains all around us and yet we were still 2,000 ft below Boulder! It was better than home, it looked like the 12,000 foot alpine meadows you find on West Maroon Pass, but we could breathe!

The only reason it wasn’t like home was our inability to connect with the world. Mr. Bush and the anti-terrorism effort have just about shut down all internet cafes in southern Europe. You have to give the ones you find a passport to use the machines. No free WiFi anywhere, kind of like trying to make a call in the U.S. without a cell phone.

And as you’re reading this, we’re back in Colorado for a bit!

Kent Zimmerman (Edu’80, MPubAd’90), after 13 fun years as the head CU-Boulder Alumni Association, and his wife Christine (Germ’80, MEdu’90) headed out Feb. 3 on an adventure with no time-line to collect experiences and memories. They’ve studied Spanish in Ecuador, picked berries in Finland, gotten lost in Montenegro and barely survived a European summer of the weakest dollar in history ($60 for a pizza!) In mid-October they are heading back to their great little discovery of Canoa, Ecuador, which Kent calls “Hammock Heaven,” unless that is, they decide to go somewhere else in South America. If it’s Canoa and the neighboring university city of Cuenca, they’ll use them as a base for further exploration of the incredibly beautiful, friendly and undiscovered continent of South America. Sororities to recruit first-year students this fall

In early 2008 the Panhellenic sorority student leadership, advisors and others began to develop a new document, the Standards of Excellence. In light of the commitment by the student leadership to work toward the standards, the university has agreed to support its desire to hold formal fall recruitment of incoming first-year women. Long-time CU football coach and athletic director Eddie Crowder passed away shortly before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9 from complications of leukemia.

His brother Geoff DeMore (Fin’98) is near the front of the raft with the yellow CU hat. The rapid is called Souse Hole and has a multiple drop rapid at the end of the run. News Briefs Czar for Energy Initiative appointed Aiming to lead the country in renewable and sustainable energy research and education, CU has appointed an energy czar. As interim energy education director, CU professor Paul Komor of engineering and environmental studies plans to take the 2006 CU Energy Initiative to a new level, aiming to launch new energy certificate programs for students and to explore professional and nondegree programs that could provide energy knowledge to Colorado companies as well. Former justice to speak, receive award Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court and one of the better-known justices of modern times, will give a public talk at CU-Boulder on Thurs., April 17 at 7 p.m. in Macky Auditorium. O’Connor will receive the Center of the American West’s 2008 Wallace Stegner Award. “When it comes to intellectual clarity and sound judgment, Justice O’Connor sets the standard for the region and the nation,” says history Professor Patty Limerick, faculty director of the center. Lavender Graduation draws GLBT community

Lavender Graduation, a highlight of the year for campus gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities and parents, takes place May 6 to honor graduates earning a certificate in GLBT Studies, other GLBT graduating seniors and their friends and recipients of several scholarships and awards. Two scholarships will be awarded by the GLBT Alumni chapter. Al Bartlett to give talk in Fort Morgan

Professor emeritus of physics Al Bartlett will travel to Fort Morgan to give his celebrated talk, “Arithmetic, Population and Energy: Sustainability 101″ on Thur., April 17, at the Morgan Community College. Bartlett first delivered the lecture in 1969 to explain the arithmetic of steady growth and to alert the public to rising human population. The importance of parents’ involvement

Over the years, parents of CU-Boulder students have demonstrated how important they are to the campus through their involvement and generosity. One family in particular demonstrates their genuine commitment to CU in every way possible. Alums at the Great Wall

In the photo are Liz Brigham Moores (Edu’74) and Tony Moores (MEdu’77) at the Great Wall of China at Badaling, outside of Beijing. They were attending the first major league baseball games held in China, March 15-16. They hail from Boulder, and say that Liz was a cheerleader in the early 70′s!

Spring Game and fun April 19

There are plenty of fun and free activities for the whole family to enjoy the day of the spring game! Hank Brown (Acct’61, Law’69) stepped down from his post as CU president on March 7. During his nearly three-year tenure he was widely credited with rebuilding the university’s image after scandals and controversy. A tenured faculty member in political science on the Boulder campus, Brown will teach a Maymester class at the law school. With Brown’s departure came the arrival of Bruce Benson (Geol’64, HonDocHum’04) as CU’s 22nd president. Read more.

Connecting with CU through the generations

My family’s “CU voice” began in Boulder in 1934 when my grandfather, Martin F. Schmidt, graduated from CU. His commitment to CU continued for 45 years as a professor of transportation, management and organization at what is now the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business until he passed away in 1981.

In 1980, a perpetual scholarship was established to honor his distinguished service by donations from corporate sponsors, colleagues, students, friends and family. It has been awarded annually since then to deserving students so they can continue their business education.

CU honored for student community service

Andra Wilkinson (shown in front of the Boulder County AIDS Project) is one of 13,397 reasons the CU-Boulder is one of only three colleges and universities in the United States to receive a Presidential Award for General Community Service.

Lasers detect potential diseases via breath

By blasting a person’s breath with laser light, scientists from the National Institute of Standards and Technology and CU- Boulder have shown they can detect molecules that may be markers for diseases like asthma or cancer.

While the new technique has yet to be tested in clinical trials, it may someday allow doctors to screen people for certain diseases simply by sampling their breath,

Conference on World Affairs luncheon

April 7-11 brings the return of the Conference on World Affairs to campus. This is the 60th year!

The juke box was never intrusive and had music you hadn’t heard in awhile, Otis Redding, James Taylor, even John Denver. It had a feature that turned the volume up for the first few bars to let you know your song was on, and then drifted back into the background so as not to interrupt anyone’s conversation.

I still remember when they put in the windows. Tom said if he had known what a difference it would make in his business he would have done it a decade before. But I liked the dark tavern look of the ’70s and early ’80s just as well.

There was something illicit and daring about walking out of the noonday sunshine, through that big heavy door with its tiny tinted square window and suddenly finding yourself in a different world. “Honey, sugar, sweetie, what can I get ya?” As if there were really any options. We all loved it, the big heavy booths; a few regulars at the bar under that lamp with the Budweiser Clydesdales circling forever; the huge old ionizer sparking away about every two minutes; and those burgers, those just right, juicy, drippy perfect burgers.

We already missed Tom, he’s been gone since May. Now we’re going to miss his restaurant. We went the last week Tom’s was open to eat that final Tom’s burger and pay tribute to a great man and the great corner of Boulder that he created. We even put up an angel tree in his honor, but we’ll never tell where it is.

Here’s to you Tom, and here’s to Tom’s.

Stump announced his plans to members of the Student Affairs division this morning at a meeting of department heads.

As vice chancellor of one of the university’s largest divisions – with more than 30 departments in student affairs – Stump has directed key operations that include the Office of Admissions, Housing and Dining Services, Wardenburg Health Center, the student Recreation Center, Financial Aid, International Education, the Alcohol and Other Drugs program, Counseling and Psychological Services and numerous others.

Following the departure of Alumni Association Director Kent Zimmerman, effective in February 2008, Stump will serve as interim director of the Alumni Association while a search for the new director is conducted. The Alumni Association became a department within Student Affairs in fall 2007.

The Student Affairs division also is responsible for coordinating the student union cost centers with the leadership of the University of Colorado Student Union, or UCSU. Evolution of the relationship between CU-Boulder and Greek organizations in recent years has been an integral part of Stump’s effort to enlist student groups to encourage responsible behavior in social settings, particularly involving alcohol use. Stump and his staff have worked closely with City of Boulder staff to improve student behavior in these areas, and to challenge CU students to become more civic-minded.

Chancellor Peterson praised Stump’s accomplishment in his 11-plus years with the CU-Boulder campus and more than 35 years in higher education administrative positions.

“Ron’s leadership and service have transformed the Division of Student Affairs into a vital organization that is the centerpiece of our campus community,” said CU-Boulder Chancellor G.P. “Bud” Peterson. “We will engage a national search for his successor, who will inherit a strong organization thanks to Ron’s vision and commitment. I look forward to working with Ron in the coming new year in his Student Affairs and Alumni capacities, both of which will benefit our university community.”

Provost Phil DiStefano said, “For the past 11 years, Ron Stump has been a valued colleague and a true leader on the CU-Boulder campus. He has been a close working partner in shaping the transformative experiences of our students and in enriching our community. He will be greatly missed, but his ethical, conscientious approach to managing Student Affairs will continue to have an impact at CU-Boulder for decades to come.” Of his time at CU-Boulder, first as a dean of students and then as associate vice chancellor for student affairs before becoming vice chancellor in 2000, Stump said, “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve University of Colorado students and their families for the past 11 and one-half years.

“I am proud of the work that our Student Affairs division does every day in making the experience of CU students a positive one, and I am gratified by our many accomplishments of the last decade – achievements that are embodied in the successful lives of our graduates. I look forward to continuing to serve CU-Boulder as interim director of the Alumni Association. It is a special opportunity for me to work with the Alumni Association and the campus to bring us together in the fellowship so well described in the Norlin Charge.”

In addition to his responsibilities in Student Affairs, Stump has played a key role in supporting the Athletic Department’s integration into the campus, with an emphasis on student athlete welfare. He has served as an adviser to the campus’s Honor Code Council, initiated the planning for an Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement and co-chairs the study group which is investigating the merits of a full residential campus at CU-Boulder.

Before becoming dean of students at CU-Boulder, Stump was an associate dean of students at the University of Virginia, director of student activities at Michigan State University and held a variety of student affairs positions at Northern Michigan University.

Stump received his undergraduate degree from Northern Michigan University, his master’s degree from Northern Michigan and his doctorate from Michigan State University. He and his wife, Janet, have two daughters, two sons-in-law, and two grandsons.

Peterson had the prerogative to decide on the leadership of the association after it was transferred from the CU Foundation to the university on Sept. 1. The move was said to be designed to provide benefits both to alumni and to university through better collaboration.

Stump will retain his position and most of his current responsibilities at student affairs, but relinquish some of them in order to spend part of most days at the alumni association, he told a meeting of alumni staff where Peterson and Stump presented the decision.

Stump earned his doctorate in higher education administration at Michigan State University and served as associate dean of students at the University of Virginia for 11 years prior to coming to CU.

Earlier this year, the alumni association was transferred from the University of Colorado Foundation to the University of Colorado at Boulder. The move was designed to provide key benefits to both alumni and the university through better collaboration.

Peterson said the timing of a search for a permanent individual to fill the position will be done in consultation with the University of Colorado Alumni Association Board of Directors and the alumni association staff.

Stump replaces Kent Zimmerman, who has served as president and CEO of the alumni association since 1996 and who recently announced his departure from the post. Stump will retain his vice chancellor responsibilities while serving as alumni executive director, with a few changes in his responsibilities.

“Kent’s energy, vision and leadership have been instrumental in making our Alumni Association the wonderful organization it is,” said Stump. “I am delighted to have the opportunity to work more closely with this great group of people and to help build upon Kent’s many achievements.”

…the entire Thanksgiving week off! Officially it’s the combining of Thanksgiving and fall break. The latter began a few years ago in October as a way to let students take a two-day time out and catch up — despite what we say about students “getting soft,” classes really are much more intense now.

But it’s always been hard to keep students in town for those three orphan days of classes before Thanksgiving. Four days of free time on one side and two on the other bracketed a time where the only way you were staying in Boulder was if you had a professor mean enough to give a test. You let that happen only once.

I remember my freshman year there was a group of us so broke or so desperate to study (because we were so far behind) that we decided to stay in the dorms together for the Thanksgiving break. It was a great three-day party. We actually had a full blown turkey dinner for about 10 of us up in the 13th floor study lounge of Stearns East. Who, by the way, builds a building with 13 floors? No wonder it sways.

Christine found a picture of the festivities the other day (notice the high quality photos those pocket Instamatics took) and, based on all the booze on the table, it’s amazing any of us are still here!

Reality hit Sunday morning as floormates from around the state and country started drifting in and we realized we had totally wasted our chance to catch up. The studying and papers that we were so sure would be behind us loomed even larger as we realized finals were just 11 days away.

To this day I couldn’t tell you what those classes were or how any of us got through the end of that semester without flunking out, but we did. Our grades and even the trials of those frantic days have all disappeared from the memory banks.

What hasn’t disappeared is what a special time that long weekend was, how we patched together a temporary family and brought a lot of very different people from some strange and faraway places much closer together. That I will always remember.

And we cooked a mean Thanksgiving meal in some pretty sparse surroundings (you try and cook a 20-pound turkey in one of those dorm floor kitchen ovens).

Howard Higman, at left, (BFA’37, MSocSci’42) (sociology professor and creator of the Conference on World Affairs) was another, along with Reuben Zubrow. And who could forget Sam Zakhem. Today, Dennis Van Gerven, Tom Zeiler, Kristi Anseth (PhDChemEngr’94). All of them make their mark on hundreds if not thousands of students.

Professor Bob Culp (MAero’63, PhD’66), although only working with budding engineers in the engineering school, is that kind of professor. I met him at our Surf Camp in Mexico. He was 68 at the time and proud to be the oldest surfer “wannabe” of the bunch. He still uses a picture from camp during his first day of class along with the following list of 100 things you’ve got to do before you graduate from Boulder.
