Congratulations to the #11-ranked Lady Buffs Golf Team for turning in a record performance to finish 4th in the West Regionals, thus qualifying for their 1st-ever trip to the National Championship Women’s Golf Tournament.  By qualifying for the national championship, it will bring a CU Buffs team to Tennessee for the 1st time since the Buffs Football Team came to Memphis to play in the Liberty Bowl.  The National Championship Women’s Golf Tournament is being hosted by Vanderbilt University at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, TN.  The Lady Buffs will tee-off at 12:58 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22 in a 24-team field beginning their pursuit of a National Championship.  They will be paired with #2-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide and #12-ranked Tennessee Vols.  In round 2 on Wednesday, May 23, the trio will tee-off at 8:25 a.m. and round 3 on Thursday will be determined by the team’s place after 2 rounds of play.

I am excited to be planning an alumni event around the Lady Buffs for their trip to Tennessee.  The event will be coordinated with the Nashville Alumni Chapter and CU’s Athletic Department.  As soon as the details are figured out, the event will be posted on all of the Memphis and Nashville Chapters’ sites.  Let’s show CU how proud Tennessee is of our alma mater and cheer the Lady Buffs on to a National Championship!

I hope everybody has had a great year so far.  For those that didn’t catch it last month, Assistant Professor Leigh Holman (DMA Mus ’03) sang the National Anthem for President Obama during his visit to CU.  She is in the College of Music and director of the opera program.  I bring this up because she is a native west Tennessean from just up the road in Trenton.

I can’t believe this academic year has flown by so fast, because it seems like only a couple of months ago that our last Summer Send-off was held and we had a great time. Well it is that time of year again and we are looking for someone to host the send-off this year and need to know by May 15th!  Last year it was held on July 31st, and CU has found the most successful events have occurred on weekends between late July and mid August.

I would like to continue this event and make this a tradition as it’s very worthwhile for both the soon-to-be students and parents as well as the alumni.  Alumni are always happy and willing to share their stories of their time back in Boulder with new students.  And anytime we can get that back and forth going with this chapter, the better.

If you are interested in hosting, this is what we will need to know from you:

Also, just know that CU’s Parent Association’s budget isn’t big enough to reimburse every city across the county who is doing a send-off for expenses, so keep it simple.  Last year the alumni that attend brought some snacks with them.  CU will send a box of goodies to share with the guest and “Welcome to CU” gifts so to speak and CU will also handle all of the mailings of the invitations and RSVP’s.  They will leave you with the easy part.

Description: Come out to join your CU family during the holidays. The Holiday Party is always a popular event for us. I am excited about this 3rd annual gathering and seeing the many new faces we have seen this year. Please bring the whole family, children are more than welcome as they are to all events. We will have unlimited appetizers set up in a buffet-style to make it easier for everyone to mingle.

Now that the Memphis Forever Buffs Scholarship Fund is just a second from being finalized, we will have a basket for voluntary donations to the fund. I will have a copy of the fund agreement for those that want to review it.

The Scholarship Fund for Memphis-area Students has been in the works for several months, but is now just about final.  It has gone through all of the reviews and edits  and is now just waiting on all of the signatures.  Once that is complete, the fund will be available for anyone to direct their charitable giving either through student callers, online, or through the Memphis Forever Buffs fundraising efforts.  The funds that were raised for this scholarship fund back in February, during the Chauncey Billups Event, were put in a holding fund with the CU Foundation until the Scholarship Fund was finalized.

The scholarship will be open to in-coming freshman from the Memphis area.  If there isn’t a viable student in the Memphis-area in a given year, it will open up to a student from the state of Tennessee. 

If there is a Memphis-area alum that would like to be part of the commitee to select a recipient, please let me know via email.

There are just two more home football games left in the season, and we all know the Buffs play 10x better in Folsom Field than they do on the road, as evidenced by the ominous 22-game road losing streak that is still active.  Let’s get a big crowd for the next two game, USC and Arizona and then I will schedule a watch party for the UCLA game with their head coach, yes you guessed it, Rick Neuheisel, former CU head coach.  Neuheisel is the coach we love to dislike ever since he bolted from CU to the northwest to take over as head coach at the University of Washington.  Anyway, the watch parties are always a fun event to meet new local alumni and catch the CU football game as well.  This year, our numbers are down a bit, reflective of CU’s record, but I am happy to say that we have had a lot of new members attend the games, so it has been enjoyable to meet the new faces in Memphis!!  Please come out and catch these last two home games and depending on the turnout, we will add a watch party for the UCLA game as well!  CU @ the game!

Description: Join your CU family as Buffs take on the Wildcats (from Arizona, NOT KState )! The game is also Senior Day as they honor all of the seniors on the Buffs football team. CU has their best all-time record against Arizona, than against any other football team in the PAC-12.  The Buffs are 12-1 vs the Wildcats with the last time they played being in 1986.  That game resulted in a 24-21 loss, giving Arizona their 1st ever win against the Buffs.  So if there is any game in which Buffs will get their 1st PAC-12 win, odds are it will be this weekend!  This will be the last watch party of the year, unless we get a great turnout for the USC & Arizona game. I am looking forward to seeing a big crowd for the last home game of the year! Let’s have RB Rodney Stewart and QB Tyler Hansen go out in style as they stampede the Wildcats.  GO BUFFS as we honor our veterans this weekend.  Your service to our country is very much appreciated!
