PLEASE SAVE THIS DATE for the Directors Club Summer Meeting! June 15-17, 2012 will find us at the Steamboat Springs Sheraton Hotel. You won’t want to miss it!
A letter from the Directors Club president
The Directors Club is beginning a new year and wishes you a happy and fulfilling 2012.
The Directors Club was established to keep those of us who loved our CU experience connected with the university. I have always believed that those of us involved with the university operate under a different calendar. Although our calendars say the year begins on Jan. 1, the year truly begins with the arrival of eager students beginning their fall term. The Boulder campus is filled with enthusiasm and energy as students begin their journey from high school and living at home to becoming adults and taking their place in society.
It is so fulfilling to be a Directors Club member because we play a small part in assisting students in that journey. We assist through our presence, our financial support, and support of the mission of the University. As part of the Forever Buffs family, the students’ journey continues long after graduation. It is the strong social and professional Forever Buffs network that keeps us connected to each other and the university.
Fostering these strong connections are Directors Club programs, including the annual Winter Meeting scheduled for Jan. 28. This year’s event features CU faculty conducting cutting-edge research in health and bioengineering that has the potential to dramatically impact thousands of lives, including your own. Topics include:
- A new measles vaccine by Directors Club member and CU chemistry and biochemistry professor Bob Sievers;
- Earlier diagnoses for disease by Chris Bowman of chemical and biological engineering;
- An unusual success story about Parkinson’s disease by Curt Freed, a medicine and pharmacology professor at CU’s Anschutz Medical Campus;
- The importance of the Directors Club scholarships by several of our own scholarship recipients.
Every year, our winter program has been lively, educational, and most importantly fun. We renew old friendships and forge new ones. It also introduces members to the new university golf course at Colorado National Golf Course where the golf team practices and plays its matches.
The Directors Club also will host a basketball event with the women’s basketball team this winter. Join us to experience the energy, fun, and skill of the CU women’s basketball program under Linda Lappe (Mktg’02). Lastly, stay tuned for more details regarding our Summer Meeting June 15-17 in Steamboat Springs.
For those of you who live out of state, why not combine the Winter or Summer Meeting with a visit to campus? Stop by the Koenig Alumni Center for a campus map and stroll to the CU Heritage Center, the university’s history museum, on the third floor of Old Main.
Lastly, we invite you to be part of our conversations on how to continue to build the Directors Club as a strong booster group. We would love to hear from you as to what you would like the Directors Club to do and be. Our functions aim to meet two goals:
- Help you stay involved with the university
- Encourage members to provide financial support to CU
The university is only as strong as the energy and excitement of its student body, faculty and alumni and CU supporters. We will be providing additional information as to how you can financially assist the university and students, not as a plea, but as an opportunity.
Please use the Directors Club as a way to get involved, renew your relationship with the university and celebrate your CU pride. I hope to see you later this month or at other Directors Club programs throughout the year.
Have a happy and involved new year! You can always e-mail me for additional information at RDIRVIN@IRVINLAW.net.
Picture yourself sharing stories of your time at CU with other alums and friends of the University!
The Directors Club is a membership organization at the University of Colorado at Boulder that supports the Alumni Association, the faculty, students and friends, as well as all members of the university community through educational and social activities and programs that promote interest, loyalty and connection to CU.

The club supports several annual student scholarships from its endowment, and they are awarded to a broad range of students committed to carrying on the tradition of excellence at CU. Club members enjoy a wide variety of events during the year, including two social meetings, a Spring arts event and a football pregame. For more information about Directors Club activities, go here. CU needs you! Directors Club members have a long history of giving back to the university. Find out about some of the many volunteer opportunities at CU-Boulder by clicking here.
Want to mentor a CU student or alum? You can make a difference!
It sounds like you had a great job! What amazing graduates come out of CU-Boulder. Wondering if you may be interested in helping other alums and students find their paths. We just launched a program called “Ask a Buff” on our online community Forever Buffs Network at www.cualum.org and we would love for you to be a part of it. Ask a Buff is where Buffs share their professional advice with alums and students seeking guidance in their jobs, career paths, relocation plans and graduate school decisions.
Once you log onto the Forever Buffs Network (formerly the My CU Network), you can click on the “Ask a Buff” tab. By being a resource there, students and alums can e-mail you or call you (whatever you prefer) for professional advice.
Help us make the Buff family network stronger by assisting other alums and students with job, relocation and graduate school decisions! And let us know if you have any questions.
