Steve Chappell (MAero’03, PhD’06) just finished taking part in the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) 14 undersea analog mission. It involved staying in the Aquarius undersea habitat 3.5 miles off the coast of Key Largo, Fla., while performing experiments inside and outside the lab related to NASA’s mission to expand human presence into the solar system.

Boston Chapter of the CU-Boulder Alumni Association

Our chapters continue to make us proud! Wade Hendricks (Mus’02), president of the Boston Chapter, organized a community service event on Sunday, May 15 to help clean up the banks of the Charles River. Over 20 CU alums participated in this great event, along with about 200 alumni from other universities across the country, none larger than the CU contingent.

CU-Boulder alumni Zuhair Fayez (EnvDes’71, MS’71) was awarded an honorary doctorate during CU’s 2010 commencement. Before coming to CU he had never seen a snowflake. During his time at CU he played soccer and appeared in the Coloradan yearbook.

CU-Boulder conferred 5,825 degrees under cloudy, 37-degree skies ― 4,530 bachelor’s degrees, 850 master’s degrees, 175 law degrees and 270 doctoral degrees. John Wood (Fin’86), founder of the international nonprofit organization “Room to Read,” gave the commencement address.

The new Institute for Behavioral Sciences building is nearing completion at Grandview and 14th. The structural framework is completed and the wall systems are almost ready to begin interior drywall installation. IBS includes faculty from 10 university departments and has doubled its grants within the last 10 years from $20 million to over $40 million.

Remember that big snow…?

Just a week ago there was two feet of snow on the ground! The entire campus was frosted with a thick layer of the white stuff. True to the adage: ‘if you don’t like Boulder weather, wait five minutes’ the sun came out and got right to work melting it away. By friday that week it was in the high 50′s and sunny.

Nearly two feet of snow blanketed the foothills near Boulder, giving the Flatirons a lovely frosting. Campus is very quiet while the students are away on spring break. The heavy snow had facilities crews working all day trimming and collecting downed branches from the many trees on campus.

The trip ranged from the Blue and White Nile’s sources in Uganda and Ethiopia to their confluence at Khartoum, Sudan, to the mouth in the Egyptian delta.

Building anticipation

Center for Community, CU-Boulder

This is the Center for Community under construction, the massive building just east of Regent Hall. It will house most CU-Boulder student services and a cutting edge dining center, the largest on campus (serving 900 people) when it opens in time for the fall 2010 semester. The $84.4 million student center will be a dream come true for the student services, which have been waiting for years to move into a physical space that more suitably supports their missions.

Visual Arts Complex begins to open

Visual Arts Center, CU-Boulder

Students began taking classes in art and art history in the brand new Visual Arts Complex last month. Construction of the CU Art Museum within the complex is still underway; the museum is scheduled to open in March. The Complex replaced the Sibell Wolle Fine Arts Building, demolished in 2008 after 90 years as the premier home of art on campus.
