Dear Alum,

Since all alumni and students are now automatically lifelong members of the Alumni Association, it truly has never been easier to get involved! And the best part is there are no annual membership dues. This is a part of our Forever Buffs initiative, the Alumni Association’s effort to engage our 240,000 alumni and 30,000 students in every step of your lives.

Programs

Chapters support student volunteers

CU alumni chapters have been finding inspiring new ways to support students ever since the Alumni Association began the Forever Buffs initiative. The New York City and Atlanta chapters hosted dinners for some of the 130 CU students visiting their areas on Alternative Spring Break trip, students participating in volunteer programs. Save the weekend, CU vs. Cal

Join Buff alums and fans as we take on the Cal Bears at our big away football game of the year in beautiful Berkeley, Calif., on Saturday, Sept. 11. Hotel rooms are reserved for CU fans in downtown San Francisco. Game tickets are available for purchase with a pregame ticket. Rooms and game/pregame tickets will go quickly, so book early!

Alumni College to focus on recession

The 5th annual Alumni College takes place June 4-5 with the theme of The Great Recession of 2007-10: Causes, Consequences and Cures. You’re invited to join CU’s foremost experts to analyze this major issue. Go here or contact Becky at 303-492-2879.

Attend special alumni awards ceremony

The annual Alumni Association Awards Ceremony is one of the longest standing traditions at CU, recognizing outstanding achievements and contributions by students, faculty, staff and alumni. The 2010 award recipients will be recognized Wednesday, May 5 at 7 p.m. in Old Main Chapel. The event is open to the public; please R.S.V.P. to Ryan Lecky at 303-492-0635. Get to Boulder for your 50th

Recall the magic and memories of 1956-60 by joining your former classmates for your 50-year reunion May 6-7. Those who graduated from CU in 1960 or before also are invited to the Golden Anniversary Luncheon on Friday, May 7 at the Millennium Harvest House Hotel. Checkout captivating China exhibit

Americans in a Changing China continues its run at the Heritage Center, third floor of Old Main, through June 30. The exhibit portrays early 20th century China through the eyes of 1915 CU graduate Lelia Hinkley, who spent 30 years in China. Her perspective is revealed through exquisite textiles and impeccably detailed letters. A study abroad display completes the exhibit with a focus on today’s CU student experiences in China. Catch the “Serving Colorado” tour in the Rockies

Join Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano, alumni and local community members to talk about how CU serves Colorado. Events are in Pueblo and Durango on May 19, Telluride and Grand Junction on May 20 and Glenwood Springs on May 22. E-mail Ally for event locations and details.

April is wolf month

Check the CU Museum of Natural History website for several events surrounding the fascinating wolf. There will be live wolves on campus Friday, April 16!

Blogs to help you navigate new media

The Alumni Association launched two blogs this year ― Geekspeak gives you the latest high-tech tips on evolving technologies, and Click & Drag is for Buffs who still feel like the Internet, e-mail and Skype are foreign.

Collusion at the gas pump?

In this video finance professor Chris Leach shares new research on the universal overpricing of mid-grade gasoline. Why doesn’t free-market competition protect consumers from inflated prices? He investigates whether collusion among gas stations is at play. Watch the video here.

The CU Veterans Alumni Association will hear from Scott McInnis, former United States congressman and current Republican candidate for Colorado governor on Wednesday, May 5 at 11:30 a.m. during lunch at the Warwick Hotel in Denver. Please register online.

Satiate yourself at Leeds food fair

Attend A Taste of Leeds at the business school, where the alumni foodies featured in the spring 2010 issue of Portfolio alumni magazine will be showing off their wares Friday, April 30, 4-5:30 p.m. The whole Leeds community – students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends – is invited. Connect with entrepreneurs

On Monday, April 19, 6:15-7:30 p.m., ATLAS Room 100, Entrepreneurs Unplugged brings Howard Diamond, chief executive officer of Diamond Consulting, to campus. Entrepreneurs Unplugged is where faculty, students and community members with technical backgrounds learn about and get involved in entrepreneurship. This is a great networking event and includes food and drink.

Help out with commencement

On Friday, May 7, 7:30 a.m. you can be a commencement marshal, helping guide the commencement procession from Norlin Quad to Folsom Field, passing out programs and engaging with students. The deadline to sign up with Sarah is Friday, April 16. Here’s all the information about commencement.

Explore the crisis in American journalism

Media experts Robert McChesney and John Nichols will explore the crisis of modern journalism at a book talk on Monday, April 26 at 4 p.m. in Eaton Humanities 1B50. In “The Death and Life of American Journalism: The Media Revolution that Will Begin the World Again” the two offer an original explanation for the crisis. Light reception to follow. Colorado Daily staffers to reunite

In conjunction with the official reunion of the class of 1960, a second reunion of former Colorado Daily staff members during the period 1957-61 is being planned. This event will likely be held Wednesday, May 5 somewhere in the Denver area. Let Nancy Dixon Davidson (PolSci’60) know if you’re interested.

Finally, a new practice facility at Coors

Ground was broken on the new Coors Events Center practice facility in March and it is scheduled to open in August 2011. It will feature two basketball and/or volleyball courts, modern locker rooms, coaches’ offices and team meeting rooms for the women’s volleyball team. It’s the first big change to the Coors Events Center since it opened in 1979. Learn more and watch a video of the groundbreaking ceremony.

Basketball coaches come and go

Linda Lappe (Mktg’02), a former women’s basketball player at CU, is the new head coach, replacing Kathy McConnell-Miller. She came from Metropolitan State College in Denver. Here’s the story and videos at CUBuffs.

Meanwhile, men’s basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik resigned his position and became men’s basketball coach at Wake Forest University. Go here for more.

In his last Plati-‘Tudes blog before he turns 50 later this month, associate athletic director David Plati (Jour’82) provides 50 random Colorado memories, discusses Man vs. Food’s Adam Richmond, who was in town recently and met Ralphie (see photo), and reprints a recent Denver Post Q&A with Dan Hawkins, among all things CU.

Afghan trip revealing

Jim Navratil (Chem’70, MS’72, PhD’75) was in Afghanistan in March for an educational and humanitarian mission. He says, “Despite four bombings and one small earthquake, I was more concerned with carbon monoxide poisoning from the wood stoves in our Afghan for Tomorrow guest house–it got very cold at night in Kabul! I met some wonderful people in Afghanistan and it is indeed an incredibly beautiful, mountainous country.” After his trip Jim returned to his job at Hazen Research. He shared in the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005, when the International Atomic Energy Agency won. See the December 2006 Coloradan article.

The gang celebrates togetherness!

Leslie Euell (Span’01) convened a mini-class reunion for the 2009 Homecoming game. It was Halloween and the Buffs lost to Mizzou 36-17. “It was pretty ugly,” Leslie recalls. In the photo from left to right are Michael Lyons (Arch’00) of Broomfield, Colo.; Katie Ochowicz (Kines’00) of Chicago; Leslie (Glassman) Euell (Span’01) and Billy Euell (Soc’01), both of Los Angeles; Steve Hurd (Arch ’01) and Derek Moore (PolSci’05), both of Denver. Katie and Leslie were roommates every year and all the guys lived together on the Hill at 12th and College. Billy and Leslie got married in 1998 after meeting sophomore year. The photographer is Michelle Herrington (Mktg’04) who lives with Derek.

Nile River exploits

An “incredibly interesting expedition to explore the Nile River” led to this photo of Jane Kokernot Beard (Hist’63) showing her Buff spirit at the Blue Nile Falls in Ethiopia. The trip ranged from the Blue and White Nile’s sources in Uganda and Ethiopia to their confluence at Khartoum, Sudan, and their mouth in the Egyptian delta. There is a debate as to whether the Nile or the Amazon is the longest river in the world. Jane lives in Dallas.

Serving in Senegal

As the CEO of Counterpart International, a nonprofit working in international development, Virginian Stephanie Wagor Meeks (Engl’87) visited Counterpart’s project sites in Senegal. The organization works to alleviate food insecurity and provide agricultural opportunities for local villages. She was joined on site by CU Economics Institute graduate Moustapha Gaye (the organization’s country director, center in photo) and Charles Eddy (A&S’63), who is a board member’s husband, as they toured the area and met many beneficiaries of Counterpart’s work.

My next four-year education

He says, “As I look back in my life, I regret I turned down my Peace Corps volunteer assignment and instead took a job as a geologist working offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.”
