Experience Zoo Lights

Zoo Lights is about glittering  animals and so much more.Gather with friends, family and other Buffs at the Denver Zoo for some holiday fun on Thursday, Dec. 3, 5:30 -9 p.m. for a sneak preview of Zoo Lights (also known as Wildlights), the largest lighting event in Colorado. Glitter trees, animated light sculptures and more create an exciting holiday adventure. Go here for more info and tickets.

CU at the stock show

Lasso your family and friends for this year’s CU Night at the National Western Stock Show on Friday, Jan. 22 at the Denver Coliseum. Your $10 ticket includes entry to the grounds, petting zoo and, of course, the ProRodeo. The show includes a lottery entry into the ‘Mutton Bustin’ contest. Go here for more information.

Be a commencement marshal

You can easily engage, contribute and celebrate being a Forever Buff by serving as an alumni marshal at the winter 2009 commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 18 at 9:30 a.m. at the Coors Events Center. This is a great opportunity to welcome new graduates into the alumni family. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Sarah at 303-735-0533 by Nov. 20.

Boulder chapter to cheer on Buffs

Join the Boulder alumni chapter at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19 for a networking watch party during the Oklahoma State football game at Harpos, 2860 Arapahoe Ave. Entry is free but drink specials and special food will be available for purchase. Boulder chapter celebrates the holidays

Join the Boulder alumni chapter and the College of Music for their annual holiday party and concert on Sunday, Dec. 6 starting in the British Studies Room of Norlin Library. Show your Buff pride!

Buff proud license-plateIf you are a Colorado resident, order CU license plates to proudly show your affiliation with CU and to support the CU alumni scholarship program. Since it began on Jan. 1, 2000, the program has raised $410,000 for scholarships. Here’s more information.

Internet privacy law to be considered

Reforming Internet Privacy Law is the topic of the next law school conference on Friday, Dec. 4. At 11 a.m. representatives from two reform groups will describe the history, goals and content of their proposals, followed by two panels.

Join the Directors Club

Please save the date for the Directors Club annual Winter Meeting on Jan. 30, 2010. More information will follow soon. The club carries out educational and social activities and programs that promote interest, loyalty and connection to CU. There’s more here.

Grants to job-hunting students

Public presentations, connections with peers and awareness of the latest ideas and trends in the workplace are essential to recent graduates looking for a job. That’s why the Boettcher Foundation has granted CU an endowment to allow undergraduates to participate in professional development conferences. Here’s more information.

Leeds School honors five alumni, others

The CU-Boulder business school honored nine alumni and friends at the Distinguished Alumni and Service Awards on Homecoming weekend (Oct. 31). The awards recognized individuals for their service and generous support of the school. Go here for photos and more about the recipients.

Network at EcoTuesday

Organized by Noel Wagner (Engl’05) and Marina Bondarenko (Fin’05), the next EcoTuesday will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the first green-from-the-ground-up hotel, Element, 9985 Park Meadows Dr., Lone Tree, Colo. (it carries a gold LEED certification). This monthly event provides a structured environment where sustainable business leaders network and gain insight from industry thought-leaders. Be part of a fun documentary

“Does the “Hairy Bacon Bowl” or the “Freaks vs. Pigs” bring back any 1971 memories? This football game at Folsom Field was played to reduce tension between the police and the hippies. If you remember it, or know anyone who does, e-mail Sue Boorman.

Giving Back to CU

Family Weekend lively

Giving-Back-parentsFamilies of current CU-Boulder students turned out in droves for CU’s Family Weekend (Oct. 9-11), with 68 percent of families from out of state. More than 4,600 registrants visited with their students, saw the campus and learned more about the university. Read more about how parents can get involved with CU.

Bicycle Classic amazes again

The September 2009 Buffalo Bicycle Classic was a great success again this year, attracting a record 2,500 participants. Since 2003 the ride has raised more than $1.2 million in scholarship funds for students enrolled in Arts and Sciences. “The planning, the route, the aid stations and especially the volunteers were all nothing less than perfect!” commented Linda Laughlin Beal (MEdu’81) “Your organization and all of its members are amazing and impressive. Athletics

Cram Coors for basketball season openers!

Your CU men’s and women’s basketball teams will tip off the season in mid-November. Cory Higgins and the men will open the season Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. against Arkansas-Pine Bluff while Brittany Spears and the women will start their season Sunday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. against UC Irvine. Buff Clubs make a great contribution

The 6,800 Buff Club members, including in Boulder, Denver, Northern Colorado, the Buff Belles and Alumni C Club, generate over $7 million annually in educational assistance for CU student-athletes. A poet in China

Victor Pearn with his most recent books.Victor Pearn (MEngl’83) sent this photo and an update from Qufu (Chewfu), Shandong Province, China, where he’s teaching English to 350 freshmen English majors for the school year at Ji Ning University. Go here to read his poem about living in China. Another of his poems, One Year of Grace, was the 15-page prologue to the 1984 Coloradan yearbook. “I consider that my greatest achievement as a poet,” he says. You may e-mail him here. Alumna active in Cuzco

Amy Bakal de Ugarte (Engl’85) has been living in Cuzco, Peru, for seven years where she is founder and dChildren at the Page in the Door library, Cuzcoirector of a local children’s library, La Página en la Puerta (the Page in the Door) and where anyone is welcome to volunteer. She also is marketing and student services manager of ACUPARI Language School, where people from around the world learn Spanish and Quechua. Amy says all of ACUPARI´s Spanish courses “immerse you in conversation so right from the beginning you are speaking Spanish.” Websites are in English.

Unique ecological changes found in Arctic

Taking a core sediment from an Arctic lake.An analysis of sediment cores indicates that biological and chemical changes occurring at a remote Arctic lake are unprecedented over the past 200,000 years and likely are the result of human-caused climate change, according to a new study led by CU-Boulder researchers. Contest Corner

The winner of this month’s contest will win CU baseball cap.

Question: The ancient Maya agricultural village of Ceren, located in Central America and buried by volcanic ash 1400 years ago, was discovered by anthropology professor Payson Sheets in what year? A. 1949; B. 1978; C. 1990.

The winner of last month’s contest is Jim Teliha (Hist,PolSci’82) of Pocatello, Idaho, and the answer was 1956, the year CU was selected for its first Orange Bowl. However, several of you pointed out that the game, in which CU beat Clemson 27-21, took place in early 1957.

Special mention goes to Craig Tiedman (IntAf”89) of Alexandria, Va., who reports he has”relaunched his old company and will be offering (men’s and women’s) CU jerseys from the 1900s-1970s (pending a CU license).”
