Being a Forever Buff

Participating in our Forever Buffs initiative is as simple as reaching out to other Buffs. A case in point is Elizabeth (Maia) Andreasen (MBA’03), who initiated a conversation between her friend’s daughter, Alex Bak, who is attending CU this fall, and Tori Peglar (MJour’00), editor of the Coloradan magazine. Alex is interested in pursuing journalism as a career and the conversation resulted in her being hired as a student employee in the alumni communications department this fall. Attend home pregames

Bring your friends and family to enjoy our gourmet tailgate buffet, listen to the CU marching band, win prizes and hear from Chancellor Phil DiStefano and Athletic Director Mike Bohn. Stampede to Austin and elsewhere

Enjoy a classic Big 12 football matchup as the Buffs take on the Texas Longhorns on Oct. 10. Go here for travel, pregame and game ticket information or call Premier College Sports at 800-416-1829. Please note: no walk-ups will be allowed for this pregame in Austin, so please make your reservations in advance! Order the wall calendar you’ve always enjoyed

The spectacular wall calendar with CU-Boulder scenes that in the past was a paid membership benefit is back this year and on sale for a modest $12.49. The calendars will be sent free to paid Lifetime members in appreciation of their special contributions to the university.

There’s a new affinity group on campus for Asian American alums. Get involved at the next planning meeting on Sept. 2, 6:30 p.m., at Heavenstar Restaurant in Broomfield. E-mail Leslie Wong to RSVP or for more information.

Celebrate Homecoming

Were you in a policemen and hippie football scrimmage in ‘71?

Do “Hairy Bacon Bowl” or “Freaks vs. Pigs” bring back any memories from 1971? They are two names for a football game played at Folsom Field to reduce tension between police and hippies. If you remember it, or know anyone who does, e-mail Sue and be part of a fun independent documentary.

Find out about gay history in Boulder

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Alumni chapter is holding a colloquium on the history of gays and lesbians at CU and in Boulder County on Sept. 26, 1-5 p.m., in Old Main. A reception will follow at Koenig. Free and open to the public. For more information contact Marc at 303-492-2280.

Annual trivia contest included!

A celebratory group, the Directors Club will gather before the CSU game.Directors Club members are set to party at Koenig Alumni Center before the CSU football game on Sept. 6, 1:30-4:30 p.m. Go here for all the details.

Law School events

Sept. 9: Telecommunications Regulation in Comparative Perspective Conference CU’s Silicon Flatirons Center brings together a leading group of government officials, academics and practitioners to examine how government policy should encourage the development of advanced infrastructure.

Sept. 10: James Rogers of Duke Energy speaks on “National Energy Policy for the 21st Century.” The Schultz Lectureship Series on oil and gas, energy and natural resources provides valuable information to policymakers, practitioners, business executives and the academic community on emerging issues in the field. Reception to follow.

Get to the San Diego races

Join San Diego area alums for their most popular event of the yearCU Day at the Del Mar Races. It takes place Aug. 23, 1-5 p.m. Go here for more information and to register.

Hear athletic director in Chicago

The Leeds School of Business hosted an event featuring three social media consultants who discussed how to leverage popular online networking tools to pursue career goals. Their recommendations were: tout your skills, advance your career path, hire new talent and connect with peers and clients. Watch the video and find out more here.

Bike a classic

A big supporter of CU's Buffalo Bicycle Classic, Longmont’s John Thacker (Arch’60) is shown here riding in Wyoming in 2008.To celebrate his 80th birthday, Longmont’s John Thacker (Arch’60) took a 300-mile bicycle tour. He also rides (and sponsors) CU’s Buffalo Bicycle Classic, which has raised more than $1 million for Arts and Sciences student scholarships and has seen a 73-percent increase in riders over 65 since 2005. Join enthusiasts of all ages on Sept. 13 as a rider or volunteer.

Alumni donate to CU in record numbers

More than 19,000 CU-Boulder alumni donated to the CU Foundation in support of CU-Boulder during the fiscal year that ended June 30 — 8.8 percent more than the prior year and the most in the university’s history. In all, donors contributed $52.4 million to the Boulder campus.

Celebrate CU football at the Boulder and Denver Buff Club luncheons throughout the season. Kickoff is Sept. 3 (Boulder) and Sept. 4 (Denver). Here’s more info and how to register.

Who’s CU’s top female athlete ever? In his monthly column of all-things CU, Plati-’tudes, associate athletic director David Plati (Jour’82) takes a look at the subject among his usual this-n-that, including what Dan Hawkins really said that shot around the nation as “10 wins and no excuses.”

The Buffalo Belles are a lively bunch!

The Buffalo Belles will host 11 luncheons this fall at the Glenn Miller Ballroom in the UMC. Each luncheon will feature a football coach and a head coach from one of CU’s varsity sports programs. Proceeds from Buffalo Belles membership dues and luncheons go to the CU athletic department and CU student-athletes. Last year the Belles donated $19,241.72! Here’s more info.

Get your Prentup Pass for soccer

The regular soccer schedule starts Aug. 22 in Boulder vs. Oklahoma State. Admission and parking are still free at Prentup Field for all CU soccer games, however there’s a new Prentup Pass wherein members receive access to bleacher seating at midfield , a CU soccer t-shirt, a team autographed poster and e-mail updates from Coach Hempen. Volleyball to feature Olympians

The first home volleyball game is Sept. 11 vs. San Diego. Three-time Olympians Robyn Ah, Mow-Santos and Stacy Sykora are with the team this year. The volleyball website is here.

CU track & field and cross country star Jenny Barringer will be blogging from Europe leading up to the 2009 IAAF World Athletics Championships Aug. 15-23. Check out www.flotrack.org for interviews, race coverage and more. She returns to Boulder in late August for her final cross country season. Then you’ve seen the CU flags the Denver Buff Club has been planting before the game for seven years between Broomfield and Louisville on what they call “The Buffalo Highway.” The photo shows Chris Bates planting a flag. Spirited essays submitted

Jessica, Jooan and Paul (Acct’76) Poston at the Alumni Association's summer Family Camp.Lifetime members of the Alumni Association were invited to send an essay telling us three things: how they’ve engaged with campus, their contributions to CU’s success and how they celebrate its accomplishments. The winning submission came from Joan Poston. She and her family spent three days at Family Camp on us this summer! Congratulations Paul (Acct’76), Joan and Jessica Poston!

A nutty success

Here Justin offers samples of his nuts at the Boulder Farmers' Market. Justin Perkins, a Boulder native and CU Denver alumnus, won first place in a state-wide business plan competition at the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship at CU Denver with his fast-growing company, Olomomo Nut Co. Now his company is working with students from CU-Boulder’s Deming Center to develop a sales strategy. He plans to sell his exotically-flavored, roasted nuts through coffee shops and specialty food stores where high-protein foods tend not to be available. Go here for the scoop.

First thing this morning I took a brief jaunt to Pearl Street, and people were wearing shorts and biking happily down the block. A few seconds later I watched folks in the Sierra Nevada Mountains stop for coffee at Schat’s Bakery in June Lake, Calif. Read more.

The winner was James Yeager (PhDMus’85) of Columbus, Ohio, who noted the stone fleur de lis work above the doors and said, “I spent many an hour as an organ department (now defunct unfortunately) grad student, teaching and also playing many of the organs in the [Macky] towers, and in the auditorium. That was under the esteemed professors Everett Hilty and Don Vollstedt.”
