Join CU alumni and Buff fans Sept. 26-27 for this year’s big away game in Jacksonville, Fla. The weekend will feature a Friday night opening reception and a Saturday pregame party. Get more information and tickets here.

Fall Preview programs are a joint effort of the Alumni Association, admissions office and others to generate enthusiasm about CU among prospective students and their parents. New scholarship honors Hank Brown

Throughout his career former CU president Hank Brown’s (Acct’61, Law’69) leadership and civic commitment have exemplified the highest hopes the CU Law School has for its graduates. The school’s Hank Brown Leadership Scholarship aims to honor students who embody traits that have made Brown one of Colorado’s most respected citizens. More information.

Guardian Scholarships: supporting foster youth

Val Peterson and her husband Chancellor G.P. “Bud” Peterson know something about the challenges facing foster children. They’ve opened their home to nine children in 11 years. That’s why they’ve spearheaded a new scholarship program geared toward college-bound foster children, the Guardian Scholarship Program. Learn more.

Sororities to recruit first-year students this fall

In early 2008 the Panhellenic sorority student leadership, advisors and others began to develop a new document, the Standards of Excellence. In light of the commitment by the student leadership to work toward the standards, the university has agreed to support its desire to hold formal fall recruitment of incoming first-year women. The tentative dates are Sept. 19-24. Read more.

Spirit Bell debuts

A new CU athletic tradition began Sept. 6 at the Eastern Washington football game when a bell donated by longtime CU supporter Barb Roberts Quinlan (Edu’65, MA’86) rang for 10 minutes twice before the game got underway. Complete story.

Eddie Crowder dead at 77

Long-time CU football coach and athletic director Eddie Crowder passed away shortly before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9 from complications of leukemia.

Rio Grande rafting isn’t for baby Buffs!

Dillon DeMore (Fin’96), in the back in the blue helmet, sent this photo of his rafting trip in June on the Rio Grande River near Taos, N.M. His brother Geoff DeMore (Fin’98) is near the front of the raft with the yellow CU hat. The rapid is called Souse Hole and has a multiple drop rapid at the end of the run. Both brothers live in Edwards, Colo. “The CU logo definitely stands out charging through the rapid!” Dillon writes.

Large Hadron Collider Operational

A group of CU-Boulder physics department faculty and students involved in the Large Hadron Collider project are expecting some big surprises following the successful activation of the world’s brawniest particle accelerator near Geneva, Switzerland last week. Read more.

Fourth anniversary of “Gordie’s” death commemorated

The alcohol-related death of Lynn “Gordie” Bailey Jr., a CU freshman, on Sept. 17, 2004, is being commemorated this week by a student group with 6,800 flags on Norlin Quadrangle representing the estimated number of U.S. college students ages 18 to 24 who have died in alcohol-related incidents since Bailey’s death.

CU-Boulder has been selected for a $485 million grant, the largest ever, to design, build and operate the Mars MAVEN mission to probe the past climate of Mars. Read more.
