Dear Alum,

With the graduation of 5,488 students last week, the campus has almost emptied out and staff members can experience the campus in a calmer, perhaps more contemplative light. However, there are dedicated students here this month, taking one of 125 intensive Maymester courses for three weeks.

opening-roof-cupola-flatiro.jpgThey run five days a week for at least three hours a day for the term and allow very little room for missing class. According to summer session director Carol Drake, students love the smaller classes and the very personal work environment of Maymester. So despite the shorts and tank tops we can finally wear, May can be intense. See the Inside CU article for more information.

Physics program named first in nation

This is the Duane physics building across from Folsom Field.

A dozen programs across CU’s campuses are among the top 10 in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2009 edition of graduate school rankings.

Several programs in the CU-Boulder physics department, which boasts three Nobel laureates, remain among the country’s top ranked. The department’s atomic, molecular and optical physics program is ranked No. 1 in the nation. Other high-ranking programs include the CU-Boulder environmental law program at sixth nationally and the physical chemistry program at 10th. See the complete story here.

Chilean volcano far from population

news-volcano-this-one.jpg

The Chaiten volcano that began erupting on May 2 in southern Chile (its plume is in the photo) is one of 200 to 300 volcanoes in the “Andean Arc” region of Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia considered active by volcanologists, some of which lie in much more densely populated areas, according CU geologist Charles Stern, who has studied Chaiten.

“There are 25 million to 30 million people that live very close to at least one of these potentially active volcanoes in the Andean Arc, including the cities of Quito and Santiago,” says Stern. “This is a good example of what could happen at any time in the region, and it is fortunate the Chaiten eruption is occurring in a pretty sparsely populated area.”

Article revives Trivia Bowl

triviabowl_1972.jpgThe lively and extensive article about CU’s Trivia Bowl by Ralph Albi (Soc’71) posted on the alumni website in our new CU Memories section has resulted in quite a buzz of responses. The Colorado Daily called the Trivia Bowl, founded in about 1968, “1. A game played by students to demonstrate how much their education is really worth. 2. The University’s second hottest and best-attended event right after the crowds at the first day of drop-ads.”

Carol Zelzer (Soc’72) says the author’s “vivid description of that time brought tears to my eyes. It was like being in the Pit Crew all over again.”

It’s all right here.

CU Voices

And the band plays 100 years!

By Walt Blankenship (Hist’89, MA’02)

Every fall semester on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons starting at 4 p.m., a very loud group of students gets together to make noise. Not just any noise, but a myriad of recognizable sounds— ‘Glory Colorado’ and ‘Fight CU’ to name a few. They are the students of the CU Golden Buffalo Marching Band. One of the university’s most beloved institutions and an outstanding ambassador to the community.

A group of around 20 students got together in October 2008 to form a brass band to support the football team and boosters at games.
