Czar for Energy Initiative appointed
Aiming to lead the country in renewable and sustainable energy research and education, CU has appointed an energy czar.
As interim energy education director, CU professor Paul Komor of engineering and environmental studies plans to take the 2006 CU Energy Initiative to a new level, aiming to launch new energy certificate programs for students and to explore professional and nondegree programs that could provide energy knowledge to Colorado companies as well. Former justice to speak, receive award
Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court and one of the better-known justices of modern times, will give a public talk at CU-Boulder on Thurs., April 17 at 7 p.m. in Macky Auditorium. O’Connor will receive the Center of the American West’s 2008 Wallace Stegner Award.
“When it comes to intellectual clarity and sound judgment, Justice O’Connor sets the standard for the region and the nation,” says history Professor Patty Limerick, faculty director of the center. Read more. |

The deadline has been extended for the 50-year reunion events May 8-9 in Boulder, so please call right away to make your reservation. Lavender Graduation draws GLBT community
Lavender Graduation, a highlight of the year for campus gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities and parents, takes place May 6 to honor graduates earning a certificate in GLBT Studies, other GLBT graduating seniors and their friends and recipients of several scholarships and awards. Two scholarships will be awarded by the GLBT Alumni chapter. Sponsored by the GLBT Resource Center, the GLBT Studies Certificate Program and the GLBT Alumni chapter, this year’s celebration will be at Koenig Alumni Center, 1202 University Ave., on May 6, 5-7 p.m. A buffet will be served. Al Bartlett to give talk in Fort Morgan
Professor emeritus of physics Al Bartlett will travel to Fort Morgan to give his celebrated talk, “Arithmetic, Population and Energy: Sustainability 101″ on Thur., April 17, at the Morgan Community College. Bartlett first delivered the lecture in 1969 to explain the arithmetic of steady growth and to alert the public to rising human population. The monthly series has featured some of CU-Boulder’s best faculty. More information.

The importance of parents’ involvement
Over the years, parents of CU-Boulder students have demonstrated how important they are to the campus through their involvement and generosity. One family in particular demonstrates their genuine commitment to CU in every way possible. Tom Pazik (MEngr’81) and Leanne Pazik are exceptional parents and supporters who realize the importance of higher education. Alums at the Great Wall
In the photo are Liz Brigham Moores (Edu’74) and Tony Moores (MEdu’77) at the Great Wall of China at Badaling, outside of Beijing. They were attending the first major league baseball games held in China, March 15-16. They hail from Boulder, and say that Liz was a cheerleader in the early 70′s!

Spring Game and fun April 19
There are plenty of fun and free activities for the whole family to enjoy the day of the spring game! Healthy Kids Day: Kids 8th grade and under will have a chance to go on the football field, meet CU student athletes and the football team, participate in sports skills stations and say “Hi” to Ralphie, 10:30 a.m. until noon. Pregame Party: Get in the spirit at the Balch Fieldhouse from 11:30 a.m. until kickoff. Free food, games and souvenirs will be available for alumni and fans on game day on a first come, first served basis.
Kickoff: See the Colorado Buffaloes in action for the first time this season, 1 p.m. at Folsom Field! More information.

Some of the University’s top awards, including four George Norlin Awards for distinguished lifetime achievement by alums and three Robert L. Stearns Awards for exceptional achievement and service to the university, will be given out on Wed., May 7 at 7 p.m. at Old Main Chapel.

Energy Initiative Smart Lunch April 22

Kent’s back!
“The wonderful misadventures of Chris and Kent” is the name of the new website of former Alumni Association president Kent Zimmerman (Edu’80, MPubAd’90) and his wife, Christine Zimmerman (Germ’80, MEdu’90). They started it while in Crested Butte, Colo., where there’s LOTS of snow, as you can see in the photo of Kent. Soon they’ll be writing from Canoa, Ecuador, where they’ll be studying Spanish.

Buffalo Bicycle Classic Sept. 7

The sixth annual Buffalo Bicycle Classic will be Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008. Proceeds from the ride benefit instate Arts & Sciences students at CU-Boulder. Last year more than 2,400 riders raised over $200,000 in scholarship funds. Save the date! Ride to September here.
